Yoga Is Medicine
Richard’s philosophy that “yoga is medicine” stems not only from years of helping people physically eliminate chronic pain, but also from observing the amazing transformative healing effects of yoga, mentally, emotionally and socially. When someone comes to Richard with long term chronic physical pain, the client is usually struggling with other issues stemming from that pain. Chronic physical pain can affect our ability to focus and as a result, we tend to be less patient, and we become mentally fatigued quickly. Eventually, struggling with constant pain can create hopelessness and depression. Also, physical pain can deter us from exercising; therefore, we gain weight and we begin to compensate physically, creating other nagging pains. Statistically, studies have shown that hundreds of millions of people of all ages worldwide live with two or more chronic conditions called multimorbidity. Those suffering from multimorbidity have a higher risk of premature death. Normally, doctors treat each chronic issue separately with pharmaceuticals, and my clients are often initially on a cocktail of drugs. It is no coincidence that these issues are connected. Therefore, when I start to address the chronic pain and the pain starts to diminish, and then disappear, the other secondary chronic ailments also dissipate and vanish. RecoveryYoga can eliminate a range of nagging chronic conditions and has no negative side effects. Conversely, pharmacological treatments don’t usually treat or eliminate the pain, but only mask or temporarily relieve chronic ailments.
